NWS says Friday's EF-1 tornado that hit Madison was only the fourth non-tropical August twister in MS in the last 32 years.   Most summer tornadoes occur as hurricanes or other tropical systems move through.  Friday's storm developed close to the ground unlike most tornadoes that spin down from rotating clouds.  NWS uses the term "landspout" to describe this type of tornado.
