Because of a mistaken text message, Jamal has a new holiday tradition—and a new friendship that lasted way beyond the time it took 400,000 retweets to travel across the internet.
Last year, the teen received a text message from a grandmother saying, “Thanksgiving dinner is at my house on November 24th at 3:00pm. Let me know if you’re coming.”
Jamal did come, even though the message was mistakenly sent by Wanda Hence who was trying to invite her own grandson—but gave a warm welcome to the young man, who asked if he could attend, anyway.
“Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do… feed everyone.”
This year, they continued what they determined would be a tradition in the Mesa, Arizona household—Jamal’s shining presence at every November Thanksgiving feast going forward.
