According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael K. Williams' nephew Dominic Dupont has announced that he will accept an Emmy award on behalf of the Lovecraft Country star if he were to win on Sunday night. Williams is nominated for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series" alongside Giancarlo Esposito of The Mandalorian, Chris Sullivan of This Is Us, O-T Fagbenle of The Handmaid's Tale and John Lithgow of Perry Mason. As a show, Lovecraft Country is also nominated for "Outstanding Drama Series" alongside The Boys, Bridgerton, The Crown, The Mandalorian and Pose.
If Williams wins an award, he would become only the seventh thespian to win an Emmy award posthumously. The Wire star was found dead in his New York apartment on September 6 at 54 years old. No cause of death has been officially determined, but the city's medical examiner is expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks.
Williams is best known for his role as Omar Little in HBO's The Wire. He later returned to HBO to play Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire and Montrose Freeman in Lovecraft Country. Along the way, he also appeared in Bessie, When They See Us, The Night Of, The Sopranos, Law & Order and CSI. Beyond his work on screen, Williams also founded Making Kids Win, an organization that aims to "build community centers in urban neighborhoods that are in need of safe spaces for children to learn and play." Dupont currently works as the director of programs for Making Kids Win.
“Michael was instrumental in helping me get through the process of the prison experience,” Dupont told The New York Post.
“He would work really hard to be a mentor to me and encourage me to stay focused on the important things.”
Dupont will represent his mentor at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. He will be joined by Williams' former co-stars Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett, who are also nominated for awards.
