Joe Ligon has been a leader and a trailblazer in gospel music since the 1960. Becoming a member of the Mighty Clouds of Joy in the 1950's Joe Ligon lead the group to some notable highs including opening up for the Rolling Stones at Carnegie Hall and topping the pop charts with "Mighty High". The Mighty Clouds of Joy early innovations was being the first gospel group to put choreography in their performance. They also were the first to add drums, bass and other instruments; then take those instruments on the road to make there sound consistent.
Joe Ligon's signature voice and unique presence held the Mighty Clouds of Joy as the premier quartet group. Traveling overseas to England, where Mick Jagger first was influenced by the quartet giants (he would later invite Joe and the Clouds to open up for them at Carnegie Hall) Japan, Austraila were just a few stops that made this group a sensation everywhere. The Mighty Clouds of Joy was the first gospel group to perform on Soul Train check out the performance.
